Welcome to the Automotive and Mechanical Engineering Department (AME) at the National Institute of Transport (NIT). This is the place where engineering professionals and talents converge and engage in executing engineering-based projects, research, consultancies and training to ensure that the Tanzanian communities, individuals, companies and humanities at large benefits. The department boasts of having competent staff with combined local and international experiences in studying, teaching, working and researching in a number of engineering fields. Thanks to the learning infrastructure and facilities that include a workshop and a modern Vehicle Inspection Centre that offer our students and staff members an opportunity to practice, conduct their projects and research as well as serving the community in terms of fabricating various products, servicing and inspecting vehicles and many others.

The department is also enjoying good collaboration with international institutions including the Chinese Zibo College where a joint training program on vehicle maintenance, engine technology and other modules has been conducted online for over a year now. We are also looking forward to executing an exchange program with the Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology (KIHBT). Locally the department is well linked with industries and its staff and students engage in training, attachment and conducting field.   This ensures that our students grab an overwhelming advantage over their peers by gaining relevant experience sought in the market while they are still studying. A good number of our staff are members professional bodies like Engineers Registration Board (ERB) and Institution of Engineers in Tanzania (IET)through which professional trainings, seminars and technical visits are frequently organized and engineers invited for experience sharing, networking and opportunity grabbing.

Students graduated from our engineering courses are likely to pursue their careers in various manufacturing industries such as plastic moulding industries, metal working factories, packaging industries and also in water and beverage industries. Other job areas are power generating plants, vehicle assembling companies, transportation companies with truck fleet, construction companies with earthmoving equipment and heavy-duty machinery, ports, airport ground equipment, railway tracks and locomotive maintenance, operation and maintenance of ferry boats and other marine vessels as well as in pipeline networks. The students can also get opportunity of being self-employed in fabrication of equipment and machinery.
