NIT MANAGEMENT VISITS THE PROSPECTIVE NIT LINDI CAMPUS.

Feb. 11, 2025, 9:31 a.m.

The National Institute of Transport (NIT) management on February 8th, 2025, visited the Prospective NIT Lindi Campus to assess the progress of the campus designated for the development of a skilled workforce and technological innovation in the Maritime, Oil, and Gas sectors. This strategic visit marks an essential step in the development of the campus toward the realization of a world-class training facility aimed at equipping professionals with the expertise needed to meet the growing demands of the maritime professionals. The campus will play a pivotal role in strengthening Tanzania's human resource capacity in this field, ensuring the workforce is equipped with cutting-edge skills to meet global standards.

The NIT delegaation included the NIT Rector, Dr. Prosper L. Mgaya, Deputy Rector for Planning, Finance and Administration Dr. Zainabu Mshana, NIT maritime experts, and NIT Estate personnel. The delegation examined the proposed Land Use Plan of the designated land for the Campus at Kikwetu, where the project is expected to take shape in the coming months.

Accompanying the NIT delegation were representatives from the consulting firm M/s Edge Engineering and Consulting Limited, who will undertake the task of designing the Phase I campus infrastructures. During the visit, the consultants were shown the proposed land where the construction of Phase I buildings and training facilities will take place, including classrooms, workshops, staff offices, and a canteen.

During the visit, NIT Rector Dr. Mgaya expressed enthusiasm about the project, emphasizing that the campus would be a game-changer for Tanzania's economy by producing highly skilled technicians and experts who can contribute to the sustainable development of the maritime industry, with emphasis on Engineering and Technology Maritime training programmes. The Campus is also expected to provide professional and short-term training programmes aimed at boosting local economies (small-scale fishing) and fostering innovation in maritime technology and resource extraction.

Furthermore, Dr. Mgaya acknowledged the profound support NIT is receiving from the Government in advancing the institution's infrastructure development agenda. He emphasized that the government's commitment to establishing the Maritime Campus in Lindi demonstrated its vision for developing local expertise in the maritime, oil, and gas sectors.

The visit concluded with a briefing from the consulting company representative on the next steps in the design phase, with a timeline set for the completion of the campus facilities.
